DO YOU NEED FASTER BROADBAND SPEEDS?

DON’T LET YOUR BUSINESS MISS OUT ON ENHANCEMENTS

ANSWER THE QUESTIONNAIRE NOW.

If Hickling is to remain a viable community I urge you to add your voice to the campaign for enhanced Broadband for Rural Communities
Cllr. Tina Combellack
Follow the NCC links below.

To Nottinghamshire Businesses
Do you currently require faster broadband speeds to enable you to carry out your business?

Will you require faster broadband speeds to ensure you can keep abreast of developing technologies, competitors and methods of doing business?

If yes, please help us to gather information about the need for faster broadband in Nottinghamshire.

The Government has confirmed that they will be allocating £4.25m towards Nottinghamshire County Council’s £17m plan to ensure Nottinghamshire’s businesses and residents have access to a superfast broadband service.

The County Council is leading on the project and is providing £2.15m toward the scheme which is set to improve broadband access for around 116,011 properties in the county. For more information about the project visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/broadband.

We also now have a Facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/Nottinghamshire-broadband/206488062800863 so please stop by, ‘like’ the page and leave your comments.

The plan focuses on improvements for properties which will be unaffected by BT’s superfast broadband roll-out plans and will ensure these areas are not left behind. Improvement works are due to start in early 2013.

We are currently applying for additional funding and need to evidence the demand for faster broadband for local businesses, particularly those in rural areas.

Please help us to bring superfast broadband to all of Nottinghamshire by completing a short survey which can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/nottsbroadband.

How sad it is that recently, we haven’t been able to walk our own village streets without fear of treading in something nasty. People have even been walking in the road to avoid the mess left on the pavements.

Together with Rushcliffe Borough Council, Streetwise and some responsible community spirited residents, we are all helping to keep the village streets clean, safe and hygienic. You will no doubt see the Dog Warden around. It is a criminal offence, an act of anti social behaviour, to allow your dog to foul in public areas covered by a 40 mile per hour or less speed sign. Of particular concern are the areas around schools. It is also an offence to allow your dog to foul along the Grantham Canal towpath and its verges and on children’s play areas, village greens and council maintained footpaths. We have erected dog bins, a controversial sight we know but necessary, to provide a convenient receptacle for those responsible owners who carry bags and clean up after their dogs. We all love our villages and enjoy walking, cycling or pushing the baby along our streets and walkways. The main danger to human health in dog faeces is the presence of the eggs of Toxocara Canis. This is a roundworm which lives, harmlessly, in dogs but presents severe danger to humans. A dog can pass 15,000 eggs in just one gram of faeces. (petside.co.uk for more information) So pick it up before it becomes a health hazard.

Keep our villages clean and healthy.

LITTER

Isn’t it surprising the amount of litter revealed along the roadsides when the grass is short? Who are these people who use the countryside as their regular waste bin? In Nevile Ward the residents do a splendid job of keeping their villages clean. Kinoulton have an annual spring clean and Hickling have several regular litter pickers and organise litter picking days. Keep your eyes open for the next litter pick day and come along and help. You would be amazed at the amount of rubbish collected and amazed and appalled at the type of rubbish found.

DOG FOULING

It is an on going problem, but one which could be easily remedied with responsible dog ownership.
You can train dogs to perform where you say and not on the pavement.
You can carry a poo bag and pick up after your dog.
It really comes to something when you find two very responsible, community minded residents washing and disinfecting the pavement because it is so soiled that people are walking in the road.

BROADBAND

I have been liaising with the Economic Development Team at NCC and through my position on the Community Development Scrutiny Group furthering the cause for enhanced Broadband speeds in Rushcliffe and in particular the Nevile Ward. The County Council have applied to Broadband Delivery UK for funding to put in place the infrastructure to delivery a minimum of 2mb across the Borough. Rushcliffe have agreed to work in partnership with match funding.

Cost estimate is £17million across Nottinghamshire, half being provided by private sector partners to be procured by April 2013. The remaining £8.5million will be provided by BDUK (£4.25m) and the local authorities (£4.25m). Deployment of superfast broadband is expected to commence April 2013 and be completed by March 2016.

I have been arguing the case for the Nevile Ward to be a priority, as whilst parts of Kinoulton receive reasonable speeds other more rural locations in Hickling Owthorpe and Upper Broughton are severely deprived. As part of the project, Nottinghamshire County Council is investigating alternative ways of delivering broadband, particularly for areas where it may not be financially viable for companies to provide cabling to houses. It may be necessary for residents and their telecoms providers to put in place the infrastructure from the cabinet to the residence. Satellite is already being trialled in two badly deprived areas.

In the meantime Belvoir Networking CIC (Hickling, Long Clawson & Stathern Networking Group) are looking at alternative suppliers for the entire Belvoir region. For more information go to belvoirnetworking.com

COUNCIL TAX

Rushcliffe have agreed to freeze Council Tax for the coming year, once again through judicial budgeting and improved efficiency plus the freeze grant. They have been able to effect savings whilst protecting their core services.

POLICING

I attended the Police Priority Settings Group meeting and am happy to report
Beat teams are still running at full capacity in our area despite rumours of cut backs. The police were at pains to assure us that they can ‘multi task’ (whilst investigating a burglary and patrolling an area they would still be keeping an eye out for anti social behaviour, fly tipping or car crime etc.)

As we are such a rural community and with the attempted theft of lead from Hickling Church I have asked that metal thefts be put as a police priority. This will include the theft of farm machinery, garden tools etc.

POSITIVE ENERGY SAVING

The down side of the street light switch off is darker streets after mid-night the up-side is that police have seen a fall in night time burglary also minor collisions and accidents thought to be through slower speeds and use of head lights.
