Hickling Plant and Produce Show
Sunday, September 27th. 2009
A big thank you to everyone who took part in the newly revived Plant and Produce Show. Over forty people put in entries, many to a number of different classes, and the resulting display was really impressive. We also raised over £140 from entries and teas, which was an unexpected bonus.
The quality of the produce was extremely high. Special mention should be made of the pumpkin grown by Will Parker, aged five, from a packet of seeds he had been given for his birthday. It was huge!
There were many entries to the classes for baking, jams and chutneys and they looked delicious. Sadly, only the judges got to taste them.
Some beautiful craft work was entered, and there is obviously an enthusiastic band of painters and photographers in the village, as we had to keep finding more space for their entries.
The children’s section also had to be extended to make room for everything. It was particularly good to see them also entering the other classes and holding their own against the grown-ups.
Congratulations to the prize winners who gained the most points for their entries. They were: 1stprize Wendy Brazener, 2nd prize Michael Simpson, 3rd prize Muriel Simpson. The children’s prize winners were: 1st prize George Collishaw aged 11, 2nd prize Will Parker aged 5, joint 3rd prize Olivia Cox aged 8, Sylvie Cox aged 7 and Max Parker aged 10.
Next year’s show will be on Sunday, September 26th. The categories will be similar to this year, with some additions, perhaps to include things like fruit cordials and sloe gin, as the sloes have been so good this year. That should be fun to judge! We would also like to have an auction of produce at the end for anyone who would be prepared to donate their entries.
If anyone has any suggestions for additions or improvements please contact Barbara McEwen, 822834, or Molly Collishaw, 823115.
