Hickling Village Hall was originally a church school, which opened on November 20th 1876 - at that time it had 78 children and two classrooms. Details of the school at that time, with information on the teachers and the photos of the children who attended the school up to 1955, can be found in The Scrapbook of Hickling and Hickling: Reflections of Yesteryear, both by Hazel Wadkin In 1975 the Hall, now no longer a school, was sold by St Luke’s Church for £12,000, with half of this money coming from grants and half from an intensive village fund-raising campaign. It now operates as a charity and is run by a management committee. It is currently used by Hickling Pre-school every weekday morning in term times and other regular events take place there – including WI meetings, a quiz night, a Film Society (see Film Society) and a table tennis club, that meets every Monday evening. It is also hired out for other purposes, including jumble sales, parties and fund-raising events. It still retains much of its Victorian charm, with a bell tower, containing the original school bell, that still works, the original windows – now much repaired – and original cast iron railings at the front. The hire rates for the Hall are shown below (correct as of November 2007 – they may be revised in Spring 2008) and the Hall can be hired by contacting Philippa Jacks on 01664 823622.
